2nd Place for “Last Warning”
Spencertown Academy, an arts center, offers this competition with the goal of encouraging creative writing among students in grades 9-12 in Columbia County, NY and Berkshire County, MA. Works were judged in an anonymous process by published authors and publishing professionals.
This clever and confident writer understands the elements of story, and makes an off-putting subject a page turner. The narrator is the very self-aware villain of the piece, open about her psychology, able to manipulate the mother and get away with her mistreatment of her sister. The controlled, darkly wry narrative builds to a point of high tension, ending in surprise. Excellent writing.

Honorable Mention for “A Single Orange”
2021 Young Writers’ Contest, Spencertown Academy Art Center
A remarkably powerful piece given how little actually happens in the story. The writer’s spare writing style worked to mirror the meager existence of daughter and mother. Fear and hunger were convincingly portrayed.
